Studies show, reducing the consumption of red meat can reduce your risk of colon cancer. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, examined further how a vegetarian diet can reduce the risk of cancer.
At the start of the study, the researchers looked at the eating habits of about 77,000 adults, then researchers examined them again, whether they had colon cancer seven years later.
After seven years, researchers found that vegetarian diet subjects had a 20 percent reduced risk of colon cancer compared with those who ate meat, while pesco-vegetarians had a 43 percent lower risk.
But what foods can specifically reduce our risk of colon cancer?
Because the study did not show specific, here are some specific foods suggested by experts to reduce the risk of colon cancer, as quoted from Womenshealthmag, Friday (18/11/2016), the following:
1. Fatty fish
"Omega-3 fatty acids in tuna and salmon can reduce inflammation in the intestine associated with tumor formation," said a professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, Mitchell Gaynor, MD.
2. Oatmeal
"This cereal is very high in fiber, and fiber can help move food along the digestive tract," says a nutritionist oncologist at Stony Brook University Cancer Center in New York, Jennifer Fitzgibbon, RD.
3. Olive oil
"Olive oil contains the associated omega-2 fatty acids that can reduce the risk of colon cancer, as it can reduce inflammation," Gaynor said.
4. Nuts
"So many types of high folate beans, B vitamins that help repair abnormal DNA in the digestive tract. They are also rich in fiber, "Fitzgibbon said.
5. Fruit and vegetables
You really need to include fruits and vegetables in the daily diet because the fiber in both can help keep your digestive system. Fruits and vegetables can also reduce the risk of colon cancer.
"Eating six to eight servings of fruits and vegetables, can help ensure that you get all the nutrients," Gaynor said.
6. Turmeric
"Spices that include staples in this Indian cuisine, contain curcumin compounds, which can protect the digestive tract and prevent or slow the growth of cancer," said Fitzgibbon.
7. Cooked Tomatoes
"Tomatoes have many lycopene that can reduce the risk of colon cancer, and cooked tomatoes, such as tomato sauce, contain more lycopene," Gaynor said.
